Energy Recommendation
The energy recommendations used for calorie calculation are guiding
values published by the German Nutrition Society (DGE). Here the energy
expenditure is derived from the basal metabolic rate, that is the
amount of energy consumption for maintaining the bodily functions (e.g.
respiratory and cardiac activity), multiplied by a factor that
incorporates the physical activity.
The basal metabolic rate depends among others on age, gender, body size and body weight. It can either be measured by experimental methods or calculated with complex formulas and is usually the largest component of the total energy expenditure.
The physical activity factor reflects the additional energy requirement due to physical activity for occupational and leisure activities. It usually varies between 1.2 and 2.4.
